How to Send Play Store Update Push Notifications Using Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM)
Category: Android Development | Mobile App Marketing | Firebase
When you publish a new version of your Android application on the Google Play Console, notifying existing users is key to driving updates and feature adoption. While in-app update prompts are common, sending a system-level Push Notification directly to the user's notification tray is one of the most direct ways to bring inactive users back.
In this guide, we will walk step-by-step through setting up and dispatching an app update push notification via Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) using custom payload links.
Step 1: Publish Your Release on Google Play Console
Before triggering any notifications, ensure your updated Android App Bundle (AAB) or APK is fully rolled out and active on the Google Play Store.
Example Release Details:
- Version Name: 1.14
- Version Code: 15
- Package Name:
com.dalogos.entertainment - Status: Active in Production
Step 2: Create a New Messaging Campaign in Firebase
- Log in to the Firebase Console and select your project.
- In the left sidebar, navigate to Engage > Messaging.
- Click on New campaign and choose Firebase Notification messages.
Step 3: Configure Notification Title & Text
Craft a concise title and action-oriented message encouraging users to update:
- Notification Title:
Hierarchy Star Reports - Notification Text:
Version 1.14 is now live! Tap to update your app.
Step 4: Target the Correct App Package
In the Target section, select User segment and choose your Android app package name (e.g., com.dalogos.entertainment).
Step 5: Pass the Play Store Link in Custom Data
To deep-link the notification so that tapping it opens the Play Store directly, configure Additional options properly:
⚠️ Important Note on Android Notification Channel:
Do not enter web URLs in the Android Notification Channel field. Leave it blank or enter your defined channel ID (e.g., default). Place URLs in Custom data instead.
Under Custom data, set:
| Key | Value |
|---|---|
url |
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dalogos.entertainment |
Step 6: Review, Publish & Verify Delivery
- Set Scheduling to Send now.
- Click Review. (If you see a notice regarding Google Analytics, note that it won't prevent push delivery).
- Click Publish to dispatch the campaign across FCM.
Result: Once published, the status will change to Active in the Firebase Messaging dashboard, displaying delivery impression counts (e.g., <1000 sends) as device trays receive the push alert!
